How to measure coaching follow-through
By NovaPath · Published
Measure whether coaching work is being revisited and used. Counts of observations show activity; they do not, by themselves, show that an agreed action happened or that instruction improved.
Separate three kinds of evidence
| Question | Possible measure | Interpretation limit |
|---|---|---|
| Did the routine happen? | Completed observations or coaching conversations | Volume does not establish quality. |
| Was the action revisited? | Due actions with a documented follow-up | A follow-up note does not prove the action was effective. |
| What changed? | New evidence related to the agreed instructional focus | Change may have multiple explanations. |
Define the denominator
An illustrative follow-through measure is: actions due during the review period with a documented follow-up ÷ all actions due during that period.
If 18 of 24 due actions were revisited, the result is 75%. Define what counts as “due,” how rescheduled actions are treated, and what qualifies as a follow-up before comparing periods. This is a suggested review measure, not a claim about a built-in CoachingOS report.
Review the quality behind the count
Read a small selection of records together. Does the observation distinguish evidence from interpretation? Is the action specific enough to recognize in practice? Does the follow-up describe what happened and inform the next decision?
Keep the discussion connected to the instructional model. A high completion rate can coexist with vague actions; a lower rate may expose scheduling problems rather than unwillingness to engage.
Establish a baseline
Choose a review period, record current performance, and use the same definitions for later comparisons. If you collect time-saved estimates, state who reported them and how. Do not present self-reported estimates as measured system time.
Use results for improvement
Discuss barriers, adjust the routine, and choose the next question to investigate. Keep process measures separate from claims of student impact. NovaPath can discuss how the coaching workflow should support your review process; reporting requirements are confirmed during scoping.
